BRAMPTON, ONTARIO: "We have planned to wrap up this encampment for the time being because there's no government," says organizer Mehakdeep Singh, adding that they will come back stronger and fight until they are allowed to continue to stay in Canada.

"As international students and workers, we are exploited in every sector, from college to government. We have been exploited by employers..."

I asked whether the Liberal government was too late in addressing the exploitation of the Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) program, where immigration agencies and employers were selling jobs to foreigners as a pathway to permanent residency.

"There were a lot of loopholes in the policies and a fair amount of opportunities to exploit the vulnerable. They could have acted on that long, long ago," said Navjot Salaria, a former international student herself and a member of the PGWP Committee.

The group says their protest has achieved some of their goals, one of which is changes to the LMIA program.
